This keynote presentation will set out how the Information Commissioner, as UK regulator for data privacy, sees the problem of data breaches. it will discuss some of the breaches that have occurred, what has been learned from them, the Commissioner’s experience of setting up a voluntary breach reporting system and what the reports have revealed. There will be an emphasis on getting governance, accountability and people factors right if personal information is to be properly protected. The presentation will also touch on new powers and penalties available to the Commissioner to address data breach and the prospects for a compulsory system of breach reporting in the UK.
